Frequently Asked Questions

There are feral cats in my neighborhood. What should I do?

Give Humboldt Spay/Neuter Clinic a call—we're happy to help! You can also visit our TNR page for more information.

My animal is in heat, can she still get spayed?

Cats can still go through with their spay, whether they are in heat or not. Dogs, however, we recommend waiting 2 weeks after they are in active heat. Call the office for more info on dogs in active heat.

My female cat had kittens, and I’m overwhelmed. What are my options?

We're here to help! If you have homes lined up for the kittens once they’re weaned, we offer a great package to have the mother and kittens fixed. If you'd like to surrender the kittens to a rescue, we can refer you to one directly or possibly accommodate them through our transfer program. Please call our office to discuss your options. Whatever you choose, please do not give away unfixed kittens.

Does my dog or cat have to be fixed to use your services?

Vaccines are offered to all animals regardless if they have been fixed. At this time, our other services like exams and dentals are only available to animals that are spayed or neutered. However, if you schedule a spay/neuter appointment and place a deposit, you may access other services prior to the surgery. Please note: your deposit becomes non-refundable if you use these services before the spay/neuter appointment.

How old does my animal need to be to get fixed and receive other services?

Cats must be at least 8–10 weeks old and weigh a minimum of 2 lbs. Dogs must be at least 4 months old.

Do you have an age limit?

Yes. Dogs must be 5 years or younger for spay/neuter. For dental procedures, pets must be 8 years or younger.

Why can’t you spay or neuter brachycephalic animals like boxers, Frenchies, shih-tzus, or Persians?

Brachycephalic animals—those with audible breathing issues and/or short snouts—are more prone to airway obstruction, stress-related complications, and higher risks of aspiration during surgery. For their safety, we recommend these pets be seen by a full-service veterinary clinic. If you’re unsure whether your pet qualifies, we offer free snout checks in person or by photo.

Does your facility offer emergency services?

No. Unfortunately, we are not equipped or staffed to hospitalize critical patients or provide the radiology typically required for emergency cases.

Does your clinic offer radiology (X-rays) or other in-house diagnostics?

We are not able to perform general radiology. However, thanks to some amazing local donors, we have dental X-rays as part of our dental program and now offer in-house blood and urine analysis though our diagnostic lab.

Where can I get financial assistance?

For spay/neuter services, local voucher programs are available. *Once your appointment is scheduled, we’ll connect you with the right contact to request a voucher. We also offer in-house financial assistance. *Dental and medical services may also qualify for in-house support through various funding sources—just ask! *While funding is available.

Do you accept CARE Credit?

No, unfortunately, because we are a non-profit organization, CARE Credit business fees are too high.

Do you accept checks?

We do not accept checks as a form of payment. However, we gladly accept donations by check!
